Maurice F. Reidy & Co., Real Estate has been in continuous operation for over 100 years serving Worcester and New England. The offices of the company have been located in downtown Worcester since 1909 allowing the company a unique perspective of the developments that have taken place in the city for the past century. We are proud to have been involved in many of those developments that have had a profound and positive effect on Worcester and look forward to continuing that role in this the second century of operation.

The company’s first office in 1909 was simple desk space in the office of a well known downtown attorney located at 340 Main Street. Over the next 10 years the company grew to the point over where it had to expand to larger offices on a different floor at the same address. In 1925 Francis S. Bailey became associated with the firm and became a partner in 1940. During the height of the Great Depression in the early 1930s things the economy was so bad that the company had only one house sale in a year’s time. At one point the last resources of the firm were invested in advertising in order to stimulate future business. The Depression offered opportunities though, and many property owners who couldn’t maintain their financial commitments requested that Maurice, due to his reputation for honesty, knowledge of real estate and how it really works, take over the bank notes on their properties. His ownership of properties such as the Lowell Building (the current Mass. College of Pharmacy building at Foster and Norwich Streets) added to his fortunes and further established his place in the business landscape of Worcester. Mr. Reidy was a founding member of the American Appraisal Institute based in Chicago, IL. He was an early member and active in the National Association of Realtors, President of the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and a founder of the Worcester Board of Realtors. He was a well known lecturer on real estate issues on a national level. From his humble beginnings in Green Island to his position of prominence in the community, Maurice F. Reidy was always aware of the potential of the youth of Worcester and became involved in many charitable endeavors in the city most notably The Worcester Boys Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of Malta.

In the 1940’s Maurice’s sons Robert & Philip joined the company and by that time the office moved to its longtime location at 2 Foster Street, at the corner of Main and Foster Streets. At that location the office became a well known landmark due to the installation of Main Street’s first neon sign. Maurice continued his operations there until his death in 1946. After Mr. Reidy’s death the company was reorganized to include Frank Bailey, Robert and Philip as partners. All three partners went on to become members of the Appraisal Institute and many prestigious real estate societies. After a fire at the Foster Street location in 1972, the company was relocated across the street to the Central Building at 332 Main Street, the new location being a highly fire resistant structure constructed of concrete and steel. In 1976 Mr. Bailey had passed away and Joseph Reidy joined the company as the junior broker. After the retirement of Philip in 1996, and the death of his father Robert in 2004, Joe Reidy assumed ownership of the firm. The company remained at 332 Main Street until 2005 when a more convenient location at 61 Harvard Street became available. The current location, at the historic Stephen Salisbury House offers free parking at the door and easy access for clients and customers.

Joe Reidy, the current owner and grandson of Maurice Reidy, views the brokerage business today as a catalyst for business and commercial activity. One inspired thought brought to action can result in new job creation, be it through the trades, professions, the media, or the financial sector. He has kept the company name alive and strove to further the good name and reputation of the company through accomplishments reminiscent of his father, uncle, Frank Bailey and his grandfather.

It is without exaggeration that there are few properties in Worcester today that haven’t been associated with Maurice F. Reidy & Co. at one time or another. This can be attested by the voluminous transaction files and historical archives of the company. The company is proud to be a part of the history of Worcester and Worcester County and looks forward to a bright future for the city and the region.
